Individual Values [IVs]

individual values are considered "hidden stats" in the same way as effort values. there are, however, three major differences between these sets of stats.
  1. EVs can raise any one stat by as much as 63 points by the time your pokemon has reached lvl 100. IVs can raise any one stat by as much as 31 points.
  2. while EVs can be trained and tracked manually, IVs are pre-determined and unchangeable (for legendary pokemon like entei and latios, IVs are determined before you even name your character!).
  3. IVs, unlike EVs, can be carried over through BREEDING.
for the full breeding guide, check its page. just a short note here: when you breed two pokemon, 3 of the offspring's 6 IVs will come from its parents' combined 12 IVs (1 set of 6 stats per parent). if you choose to breed for high IVs, replace the parents with the offspring (when possible) carrying higher IVs. this will ensure you have the best chance of getting great IVs.

people who have and continue to research IVs in the current games report unanimously that as your pokemon gains lvls, his or her IVs will become easier to determine because the IVs' influence on his or her stats become more apparent. this is because IVs have an exponentially-increasing influence on stats. good luck calculating the IVs of your lvl 3 pokemon; while his or her stats may vary by 2 points, his or her IVs could vary from 5 to 25. save your game, then max your pokemon with rare candies to accurately determine IVs. don't save your game at this point, this was just to determine the IVs. i'm sure you'd prefer keeping your rare candies and using them too, yea?

not too complicated (unless you want the formulae for calculating IVs...bleh), but very significant to your pokemon as they lvl up. IV hunting requires the most patience of anything else in the games, so if you are committed, be patient. it will take you a while. consider:
  • you have about a 1 in 1000 chance of getting a pokemon (wild or bred) with 2 maxed IVs.
  • you have about a 1 in 1 billion chance of getting a pokemon with all 6 maxed IVs.
literally.
just some perspective.
